Hair Drama 101

Hair - Dead cells that causes untold drama in the life of many women.

I cut my hair in September, October, and December. Then I relocated, in the unfolding drama that took place when I relocated, I let my hair go and I did not cut it again. I have the kind of hair that many people will feel jealous of. In blackology (lol), it is called good hair. In Pamela's home, it is called, soft, full and extremely curly. It is the kind of hair, that I really do not have to do anything with - just wash, wear with a ribbon and I am set to go.

On Saturday, I started getting myself ready for this week (as you people know, I start my new job this week), I looked at my hair in the mirror and I just felt the urge to cut it down. I found a nice salon owned by Dominican women. I go in there, show them a picture, and tell them how short I want it. She starts cutting! I wanted more cut off. She cuts some more and then decides that she feels like putting some FLAVOR. Before you know it, there I am with almost gorimapa with some funny thing in front. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Lord will anyone recognize me when I step into the office? You know me, I decide to kinda work with the style. At least, I will be different eh. Most important thing.

3am, on Sunday, I wake up and go to the mirror to look at myself. I am nearly in tears. My beautiful hair - I miss it so much already. What was I thinking? sniff sniff. I think about wearing a WIG. Yes, in my time of STUPIDITY - I once bought a wig. Okay, the story was I was trying to impress someone who I shouldn't have been trying to impress. I looked for that wig, I couldn't find it. So there I am Sunday morning - depressed and searching for that wig. By 8 am, I realized - you know what? It is hair - It grows back. I definitely look different and I am GOING to WORK this short hair.

As I leave for church, I decide to work it. I feel much better about my hair now but I do miss it from time to time. I missed it more when I went to hang out with the baby and he looked at me and said "DADDY".

Confession time: I confess to reading Ekene Onu's,"the mrs club " at church during service. I couldn't put it down. That book is so well written and just simple DELISH!!

Ignore typos...I am getting ready to get out of here....

Question:

Ever considered cutting your hair really short? How did you feel after the cut?

Does a new hair cut often equate to a new outlook?

Men: Have you ever done anything drastic with your hair - jerry curls, dread, - how did you feel after that change?

Announcement: I will be working on SARFM Radio on Saturday from 2-5 pm (New York time). Ekene Onu (the author of the mrs.club) will be interviewed at 3 pm this saturday. Do tune in.
For those that have read her book - pls, send your questions to pamelastitch@yahoo.com, or put it in the interview corner on AfricanLoft.

Have your say?

Hey girl...I feel you! I cut my hair for the first time in my life when I was 9 and I regretted it instantly....I kept my hair short from then till when I was 13 and then cut it again when I turned 16...I rocked that Toni Braxton look sha! But the glee from cutting it faded quite fast...last time I cut my hair was at age 22 and I alsso regretted the rash decision....
I don't know why but I seem to prefer my hair long even though no one gets to see it...

Yeah, a hair cut equates a new look...I really should get that book....been hearing things about it...

lastly...Happy Easter babes! ;-)

I've had long hair since I was ten or eleven, and for years I never thought about cutting it. But nowadays, the thinner I get, the more inclined I am to cut it short. And then I am thinking really, really short. But 60% of my acquaintance (most of them male...) cannot stand the idea. In any way, I am not desperate for a change yet, so the hair can stay for a while longer. But what is it with guys and long hair?

as usual, dear girl, u update too fast for busy me to keep up,but i do try to devour all ur posts in the little time i get. u deserve the Responsible Blogger award!

cut my hair, felt a bit nauseous with the first snip, but then it wasnt a very low cut. even at that i quickly covered it with a weave the next week because even with the compliments,i couldnt bear the hair. i just couldnt.it looked wrong. i also cant stand too long hair,so what i do is trim regularly so i dont have to cut it real short either.

stop by mine sometime, even if i'm irresponsible. just been mad mad mad busy.i dont even blog-stalk anymore. sad.

oh the hair drama. do i know it. I cut my hair like about four years ago, really short, enough to hold a braid extension though. it was so freeing. I just picked up any old pair of scissors in the house and after the first snip i started chopping it off like a mad woman. it felt so good. My dad liked it (i guess because he thought it would make boys less attracted to me and give me more time to study, i dont know). My brothers loved it. But my MOM HATED IT!!!! In fact, anytime I wanted to go out and get my hair braided, she would pay for it, lest I threaten to cut my hair again. It's quite surprising the female reaction in my family. Any time I mention getting a hair cut they are mortified. I'm going to write a post on it soon, females imposing beauty standards on other females - kudos to your post. Right now I'm settling with dreadlocks - yes an unconventional route. But I like them and I keep them neat and probably wash my hair more often then when i was relaxed.

oh i forgot to answer the second question. about changed outlook. it all depends on the wearer and what season you're in, i suppose. i think my change in hair was a part of the refocusing of my outlook process, and not the motivator. it was more of a physical manifestation of some of the things i thought and cared about.

uzezi: no, i know dey show. As I mentioned my male baby cousin called me daddy. lol!!! pammy is hiding....

moni: I will like to add that it often equates to a scary look. You really should. I think it is the best in african chic lit. I do not know if there are other african writers that write within that market. I am trying to find out.

esther: LOL!! I do not know. But, I know that I have definitely seen the look the look of horror on many men's faces. :D

drama queen: so i see that you are working it eh??

yankee: thank you o jare. LOL!! but who knows by then I might decide that I do love short hair.

tee: I just read your recent post. ehm ehm ehm. :D

afro: lol!! I will not be surprised if you told me that you cut off your hair.

fo: biko, I have seen your hair. Pls, do not go for the gorimapa look.

Nneoma: I do not get it too. For years, i spoke about cutting my hair and my parents were like hell to the no. My daddy went as far as telling me that it is a bad omen to cut my hair so i don't cut it....oh and they don't know that I have cut it yet. They will flip when they find out.

This post reminds me of the nightmare I had recently.

I went to the hair salon to take out my braids and the hair stylist held a huge chunk of my braids, right in the middle of my head. Next thing I heard was the sound of her pair of scissors "snip snip"
Pamela, to say I was in shock is an understatement. I almost died of a heart attack.
I knew what that meant - I had to get a hair cut and I'd have to wear a wig till my hair grew. I couldn't even speak.
U have no idea how relieved I was when I realised it was all a dream. Of course the first thing I did when I woke up was to touch my hair. I no fit shout! lol.

That said, I don't think I'll consider cutting my hair (for now). I just love my long hair...

oh this cutting of hair thing...i grew up with sisters that had hair longer than me...i used to always dream of long hair and do anything to attain, including braids, jheri curl, weave...i have now come to realize that i will most likely never have really long hair as short hair fits me better...

...one day, someone managed to convince me to do a short hair cut...the compliments i get always shock me...one woman even told me i should always wear my hair short and NEVER do braids again...even a brazilian friend (and brazilians love them some long hair-as in long hair=feminine) said i was 'hawter' with short hair...my sis has even told me i should try going bald...i am thinking locks in the near future...i am still always apprehensive after a new cut/hairdo until the compliments roll in but even then, i'll refuse to leave the house without earrings less i am mistaken for a boy-a residue of experiences in my youth...

...new hair does equal a new outlook for me...it's a different perspective...similar to wardrobe changes (i've started wearing heels more and wow!!!)...hair, especially with black women, is always an interesting topic...

My dear, it's good to be daring. It's nice to be different. I am on a very low cut as we speak. I first did thatn in 2004 to 2005. And I cut it again last December. My stylist is no other than my husband.

This low cut comes with a lot of issues in Nigeria where I live.

To some, am African queen, to the other am am cool like than.

But the disadvantages outweighs the advantage but who cares it's my life. Many feels am just a girl cos I look 21 compare to almost my 30yrs of existence. Some beleive I lost someone cos it's a cultural thing in Ibo land while others always ask "does your husband approve"? As if they are not taliking about my own head!!!

I dare to be different! I will grow and cut again again and again
