Are You Being E- Maintained?
Technology is great
until it starts taking a heavier role in our relationships, by making
some quite lazy and changing the standards on what is acceptable
behavior in a relationship. This is the era of e- maintenance, the era
when it is okay to have several boyfriends or girlfriends on line and
keep in constant contact with them either via texting, whatsapping, and
skyping, if you are feeling particularly lonely or horny. Of course,
let’s not forget the constant pings or pokes, and the freedom to
arrange dates/ 'sexates’ via these technological tools.
Now, if both parties are consenting adults and they are very aware of what they are doing, then I say by all means, go ahead and meet that need. But, it becomes problematic, when one is under the impression that he/she is in a relationship with this person, while the other partner views him/her as just an online partner/occasional booty call or 'online counselor/skyper/let me see your face when I am feeling horny or lonely/'pingster’. That really is where the problem often occurs.
Unfortunately, men have learnt at a young age how to compartmentalize emotions and feelings and until women learn the same, we will keep on hearing sad stories about women who fell for these tricks. Now, some will swear that they aren’t being e-maintained and that rather, because of the situation - that is the only way of keeping in touch. The situation being those who are in long distance relationships.
My response is that everyone knows when they aren’t really important in the frame of things. You , do not have to be Einstein smart to fill in the gaps. Yes, long distance relationships, particularly those with people in different countries will involve a lot of technology. But, is that really all that you have going in the relationship? Secondly, I will have to ask - what kind of technology is being used to keep in touch and how much time and money is being spent on that technology to communicate with you. I am sorry, but it all adds up.
How do you know if you are being E- maintained?
a) All communication occurs via technology that involves the least amount of energy. Texting, Whatsapping, Poking, Facebooking. You can contact several gents and ladies all at the same time. You can even create folders with terms and sentences and just basically, copy and paste.
b) You only hear from this person when he/she is particularly horny/depressed/wants to share/ lonely.
c) You look around you, and you can’t really see anything that this person has contributed into your space. Something that marks his/her spot. Something that shows that he/she is an important facet of your life. There are no gifts, no paintings, no jewelry, no books, no nothing. In his/her spot, there aren’t any markers of your presence. Yes, pictures are great markers.
d) You only hear from this person, if it is during the holidays’ and the person wants a particular thing. It could be a gift of some sort. Basically, in the ‘e-maintanance’ relationship, you are the only giver. There isn’t an equal exchange.
e) I remember talking to a ‘friend’ of mine, who was /is e maintaining several women, a couple here in the states, one in the UK and several in different parts of Africa, and I asked him, ‘really, what‘s going on?’ and his response was that, ‘though he had someone who he considered himself being serious with in the States, these other ladies weren’t really important’ but yet, one of those ladies was blasting all over Face book, how she loved her man and ‘how love was such an emotion that was making her high’. Please, cue in my cynical face at this juncture. Ladies, be careful when it comes to men you meet on the net, many have several faces and many are in polyamorous relationships.
f) You can change the rules. Pick up the phone and call. Does he/she return your call? text or whatsapp/email back? If he/she returns your call at a good hour, not whispering, not at 12 am...then maybe..if he/she whatsapps/emails/texts back then......
I will end by asking that men and women take the time to look at their ‘relationship(s)’ this week. Are you being e-maintained? When a man is ready for a relationship, he puts out all signs to show that he is ready. He commits time. He commits financially. He doesn’t play games. He marks his territory. He doesn’t get involved in e-maintenance relationships because he doesn’t want you to be confused about his intent. There is a clear difference between a man and a boy, women should learn the difference. There are many boys walking around, dressed as men. Similarly, when a woman is ready for a relationship - she makes sure that there are no mixed signals that she gives to men that she is open to their advances. She is polite but very clear. She doesn’t play games. She commits time. She commits financially. She also marks her territory.
I hope that this will be helpful to some out there. For those who are tired of being e-maintained, maybe there is a need to make a change. Be the strong one, break out of that mess today. Change the rules. Stop being satisfied with substandard behavior. That doesn't make you a good woman or man. It makes you seem quite foolish.

What Is Love?
As some of of you know, I am the epitome of the classic romantic, with open eyes, I often tread in on areas that are deemed inhabitable by others as I search for that one, that needle in the haystack. But, as I have grown, I have come to the realization that love comes in different shades, different sounds and different feelings.
When I was younger, love came in clashes of cymbals, lots of noise, and the constant thug of emotions. I read my romantic tales and watched my romantic comedies, with star crossed eyes, as I waited for my prince to come in a flash of light and rescue me from the hum drums of my realities.
But as I grew older, I realized that love doesn’t often come the way you expect it. It doesn’t come with all the signs that you place on it. Sometimes it comes quietly, like a whisper in the night, it often comes with the person that epitomizes the standards set in one of the holy books. Love often comes with patience, kindness and care. It often comes with a strong liking that goes beyond quick lust and the need to satiate your bodies in the fiery dance of passions. Love often comes with commitment, being able to take a step to the side to allow the other shine or being able to allow the person take their journey with the hopes that their journey will bring him or her back to you.
Love often comes with hope and faith knowing that no matter where that person’s journey takes them, if he/she is meant for you - you will be back at one. Love often comes with the ability to let go and just fall knowing that he/she whom you trust so much will be there to catch you if you fall. Love often comes with harsh realities and deep truths and the ability to see the person as he/she really is and still be able to look at him/her across the room and fall in love again.
For me, love is a security blanket knowing no matter how far I go, or whatever happens, knowing I am accepted just the way I am. Every one has their different ways of defining love but to me love is patient, kind, joyful, always wishing well, it is immersed in hope, faith and often times a deep sadness.
What is love to you?
Till next time,
Pammy

Could Your Man Be Cheating?
I know a couple of men started muttering when they came across this topic: “what is up with Pamela and these kinds of topics?”. Yes, I know I have approached this topic from several tangents in different write ups -”men like wolves, small house problem etc”. But, I realized, that there is still a lot more I have to say about this. Maybe, this will be my last write up on this, who knows? Okay, maybe till I come across something that ticks me off. Last week, I got a chance to talk to a guy friend of mine who I had lost contact with in years, and he let it slip that he knows that his daddy was cheating on his mother. I remember being in shock at the blase way he mentioned it. I know African men cheating in most of their love/lust relationships isn’t a new thing but the tone that this was mentioned, made me realize that to many African men - CHEATING IS NOT A BIG DEAL! Having to deal with this onslaught of emotions, I decided that I need to discuss this with my co host and friend on radio. Bringing my co host - Mwangi on and chatting with several Africans who were logged on, I realized that these two rules seem to be quite true of our men:
a) African men WILL CHEAT.
b)There is a cultural expectation for these men to cheat, as there is a cultural expectation for African women to forgive them and take them back.
At first, I was in shock at this feedback, because I am being told that as women, I should not expect simple givens like trust and ‘fidelity in a truly ‘committed’ relationship. So, my question really, if the situation were the reverse, “should I expect my man to be blase about it?”. Yes, I can hear the chuckles of some of the men at that statement. We know men will not put up with a cheating partner. I would have taken this further and called for an open relationship but that is a topic for another day.
Let’s deal with the basic question: Why do African men cheat?
a) simple answer: because they can and they can get away with it.
b) complicated answer: because they want to explore something extra, greed, insecurity.
Now, back to the main topic at hand: how do you know your man is cheating?
a) He picks up an argument every time - nothing seems to please him. The main reason for this is because, he is looking for an opportunity to connect with his new, “connection with the classic line, I am so misunderstood aka she doesn’t understand me but you do”.
b) Erratic behavior
c) You come across condoms in his car, his wallet or you notice that there are missing condoms in the pack.
d) He suddenly becomes too nice. For example, if you have a miserly man and all of a sudden he starts buying you stuff like there is no tomorrow, he is doing that to assuage his guilt.
e) He doesn’t notice you in your sexy get up aka freakum dress.
f) He suddenly becomes experimental in the bedroom.
g) calls you by another woman’s name during that moment.
h) Spends all his spare time on the phone with a particular female friend.
i) Raises hypothetical questions like, “do you think it is possible to love more than one person at one time?”.
j) wants more sex
k) wants less sex or no sex
l) turns off his cell phone when he’s home or with you or goes outside to make his phone call.
m) charger problems/lost cell phone/lost charger - being the reason you can’t get a hold of him for days.
I will end by quoting an African man who states -”if he’s African,he’ll probably cheat” and if you are a virgin and you are dating an African man - he’s probably cheating.
By the way - men could we change the lines a bit, if I hear, I am so misunderstood one more time - I will literally scream. oh yes, emotional cheating is still cheating.

Thank God It Is Friday... (Update)
All I can say is that I am happy it is Friday, this has been a long, LONG, week. I really have nothing to write here...
Okay, what have I been up to?
a) I have watched someone really close to me finally get the courage to leave. Many of us laugh at the whole concept of being brain washed. But, it does happen. So, really, think things through before you accept it and ensure that it matches your personal truths. She finally saw that certain behaviors were unacceptable. In my heart, I am singing Hallelujah, may she have the courage to keep to her decisions.
b)As most of you know...I have transitioned radio stations. Yes, Pamela, is always changing but do you know what I have noticed...at the moment, these changes are taking place, it often seems to be the worst decision ever but later on, I find out, oh my goodness...this was the best decision ever. So, I look at this in that light. (I think this whole lesson ties into my bat incident last year). Why this radio station? I will go into this more fully in two weeks time before my first show with them. Of course, the radio station is African!
What has Pamela been up to in the past week, week and a half?
c1)NO, I was not on a secret honeymoon!
2)No, I was not secretly becoming a porn star somewhere!
3) I wasn't kidnapped by the DHL (or any mail/parcel delivering)guy. But, quick question though, are these men specially picked for their fyness? I have often wondered because I am yet to see an ugly one. Just asking...na innocent question!
Pamela's Advice For the Week:
Make sure that as you listen to the sweet, sweet gossip from whomever it might be, don't accept it, till you confirm it from the source. I have noticed that people love filling the gaps, adding salt, sugar and pepper to stories and in some cases, enjoy the whole process of FABU! (Naija people know what I am on about now!). I keep to my general rule which states: if two people know each other, thou shalt not be involved in the spreadations (my new word) of sweet juicy, juice (gossip)...whatever I know about both sides shall be kept with me and not shared with others. As most people know, I am GREAT at keeping secrets. This na general advice before una come disturb me for here.
*Pamela, needs to be motivated to crack open her text books to review or she will be getting an F on her upcoming exam but I am often so tired by the time I get home..... :-(

Birthday wishes and thank you's
Every birth year has always been significant to me, because it is one in which I choose either to pick up certain things or to let go of certain traits/projects or people. This years' was one just like the other years in which I got a chance to review certain choices I had made and got a chance to correct them.
About three and a half years ago, I walked into a certain project because at that time, I was hurting and I needed to surround myself with what made me happy. Working on that project brought me some healing and on the other hand opened my eyes to certain things that were not right. I will say that project made me an adult. As years progressed, I realized that certain things were not going to change, behaviors were still going to remain the same, and certain attitudes will continue on the way it is and I realized that there were two options: a) either remain within the project and close my eyes and let things continue the way they are or b) walk away and work on projects in which I have part ownership. It was a very tough decision because, yes, I had been part of them from the beginning and because I believed I had some sort of loyalty to my peers and all.
But, after analyzing, reanalyzing and talking to a friend of mine who sees things in dollars and cents (spent approximately 200 dollars per month out of my pocket - I don't want to calculate how much that was out of my pocket for the past three years) - we all came to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong with letting something go when its focus has moved to a place that is destructive. There is nothing wrong with moving on. So, I decided to do so.
I want to use this opportunity to apologize to all those I brought onto the project..I know many of you didn't want to but just did so because I asked. I want to say thank you for the support through the years. I want to let you know that by Mid October - late October, I will be with a different group, still within the same kind of project but I will be meeting eclectic needs which will be challenging and fascinating - we are still negotiating.
By the way, I currently have bags under my eyes...STUDYING IS difficult particularly if you've taken a break for about a year (I really do not know how some people do it)!!... and I still LOVE my field - there is so much versatility in what I do. People look at the field of HR as one of just benefits and compensation but there is so much to it. In what I do currently, I work with different kinds of people from so many backgrounds and each person has a different story of what made them who they are and brought them to this point. Will this feeling last I wonder? (Some friends will say that is the question of the moment)!
How was my birthday? It was great - I want to say a huge thank you to those who remembered, I got so many birthday wishes...lol!!...that really made my day and someone, even understood my love for cheese cake and flew my cheese cake from his hometown to the studio so I can have that on my day. Thank You....you know that really brought tears to my eyes!! :-) I really appreciate the blogging family and that was what made me realize that there are different kinds of families but the online family could also be strong...
So to the next adventure.........and as I always say, "always remain true to yourself because at the end of the day...YOU are the one that will be held accountable for the decisions that You've made".

Saturday 3 - 4 pm New York Time On SARFMRADIO
As most people know, I had a blast talking to Ekene Onu on SARFMRADIO about a month or so ago. For those that followed that interview, we did talk about her book and ended up discussing relationships particularly from the Diasporan African perspective. I was so impressed that her answers were not the standard cookie cutter African woman answers but rather her answers showed an awareness of Africans in the diaspora, the expectations of Africans, knowledge, humor and most importantly wisdom.
I knew it was time to bring back the Lovers Lounge after my brief hiatus but I knew that it needed more of a vavavoom, I reached out to Ekene because of the reasons I mentioned earlier. I also reached out to L.A also known as Brown Suga, a co worker on SARFMRADIO. Brown Suga will be bringing in a modern day edge to the show. I reached out to Brown because I loved her bluntness and I knew she will say it as she saw it. We, three, dare I say it, independent women will be hosting a show every last Saturday of the month from 3pm -4pm (Eastern Standard/NY Time). Please, listen. I will love to know what your thoughts are and if you could call in and participate - that will be great.
